June 29th, 1993 @ 2:11 a.m.

This day always takes me back to the first time I saw you
Tiny and pink they handed you to me and I remember thinking
How in the world could something so perfect come from someone like me.
At that moment I felt inadequate and undeserving of such a wonderful gift
I said to myself, “What do I have to give to her?”
As I examined you all your fingers and toes
I thought to myself all I have to give you is my heart
And I realized at that moment that, for the first time in my life,
I was giving complete and total access to my heart.
You have the ability to walk in and out of my heart and it scared me
but since that was all I had to give, I gave it to you.
As you have grown every time you experienced pain I felt it
and I wanted to snatch bald anyone that caused you pain
I wanted to fight all your battles and make things better.
Then came this day, one I thought would never get here

I was in labor for 13 hours, finally you were born

And I find myself missing you already

Oh, I know you are not going anywhere
But my heart aches because I realize
I’m not your defender anymore nor the one that fixes all the breaks
You’ve become a woman right before my eyes and for awhile
I missed you being little thinking I was the best person you knew
and you always wanted to be with me.
Today we cross this bridge and I’m not holding you
as I did when you were a child
But walking hand in hand, side by side together
Watching you grow into the woman has been my greatest joy
I wouldn’t have missed loving you and being your mother for nothing.
You have been a huge part of me becoming who I am and
I thank you for that, I thank you for making me a mother.
Everyday with you in my life has been my best day.
