   It was the summer that Jeffrey Austin jumped off the top of Washita bridge for Ida May Thompson and landed on a submerged stump which broke his leg in two places. Now he was told many times to stay off that bridge because the water is not clear, but a muddy reddish-brown in our part of the world, and, who knows what might lay beneath. But Jeffrey was always showing off and this, in love and wishing to prove his worthyness to Ida May. Besides, he never was the type to listen when the voice of reason frantically knocked. Some thought he should have landed on his head for being so hard-headed and others thought that if he had, he wouldn’t have been hurt at all, for being so hard-headed.
